The Physical Education Department at Lisnagarvey High School provides opportunities for pupils to involve themselves in various activities by way of a planned, balanced and structured programme incorporating all aspects of the programme of study outlined by DENI. Such a programme will facilitate and encourage the acquisition and development, skills, understanding and desirable attitudes, thus contributing positively to the intellectual, social, moral and physical development of all pupils.
Throughout Key stage 3 (Years 8-10) all classes will be timetabled for a minimum of two hours per week of physical education, including sports, in formal lessons. Activities pupils participate in include swimming, soccer, rugby, basketball, athletics, cricket, gymnastics, netball, hockey and dance.
Classes in Key Stage 4 (Years 11-12) will have a minimum of 1 hour 20 minutes of formal physical education. GCSE PE if offered as an optional subject in Years 11 and 12.
Pupils in sixth form have the opportunity to participate in sporting activities. The pupils can represent the school on senior football and rugby teams while other recreational sports include the fitness suite, golf and indoor football.
Lisnagarvey High School can boast of the sporting facilities it has on offer. The outside facilities include a rugby pitch, two football pitches (deemed the one of the best pitches in the province), training grids and a small training soccer pitch. The indoor facilities include a gym and a hall which can be used for netball, basketball, gymnastics and other indoor sports. The fitness suite has just has just been set up and consists of state of the art weight training and cardiovascular equipment. These include running machines, rowing machines, cross trainers and cycling machines and again is the best of its kind in Lisburn.
The school offers a range of after school sporting activities. Pupils get the chance to participate in rugby, soccer, netball, athletics and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
