Staff

Mr S Rodgers (Head of Department), Mrs M Dougherty, Mr A Porter, Miss A Johnston

Departmental Aim

The Physical Education Department at Lisnagarvey High School provides opportunities for pupils to involve themselves in a very wide variety of activities by way of a planned, balanced and structured programme incorporating all aspects of the programme of study outlined by DENI. Such a programme will facilitate and encourage the acquisition and development of skills, understanding and desirable attitudes, thus contributing positively to the intellectual, social, moral and physical development of all pupils.

Key Stage 3 Provision

Throughout Key stage 3 (Years 8-10) all classes will be timetabled for two hours twenty minutes per week of physical education, including sports, in formal lessons. Activities pupils participate in include swimming, football, rugby, basketball, athletics, cricket, gymnastics, netball, hockey and dance.

Key Stage 4 Provision

Classes in Key Stage 4 (Years 11-12) will have a minimum of 1 hour 10 minutes of formal physical education. GCSE PE is offered as an optional subject in Years 11 and 12 and pupils choosing this option receive an additional 1 hour 10 minutes.

Post 16 Provision

Pupils in sixth form have the opportunity to participate in sporting activities. The pupils can represent the school on senior football and rugby teams while other recreational sports include the fitness suite, golf, indoor football, swimming and many other recreational sporting activities.

Departmental Facilities and Resources

Lisnagarvey High School can boast of the sporting facilities it has on offer. The outside facilities include a rugby pitch, two football pitches (deemed to be one of the best pitches in the province), training grids and a small training soccer pitch. The indoor facilities include a gym and a hall which can be used for netball, basketball, gymnastics and other indoor sports. The fitness suite has just been set up and consists of state of the art weight training and cardiovascular equipment. These include running machines, rowing machines, cross trainers and cycling machines, top quality resistance training machines and again is one of the best of its kind in Lisburn. Future development plans include the construction of new tennis courts and a full size Generation 3 astro turf facility complete with floodlighting. It is expected that these facilities will be used by the local community under our Extended Schools Programme.

The school offers a range of after school sporting activities. Pupils get the chance to participate in rugby, football (boys and girls), netball, athletics, table tennis, badminton, archery, hockey, basketball, volley ball, parkour running and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
