Year 8 LAC Words
SEPTEMBER
NOUN- A noun names people, places or things- nurse, river, chair
VERB- A verb is a ’doing’ or ’being’ word- shout or were
ADJECTIVE- A ’describing’ word which describes a noun- small, green, horrible
PUNCTUATION- All the rules you must follow when writing
OCTOBER
PARAGRAPH- A group of sentences about the same thing. A new paragraph begins a finger width from the margin.
SINGULAR- Means just one thing- a frog or a sheep
PLURAL- Means more than one thing- two frogs or five sheep
NOVEMBER
VOWEL- The letters a, e, i, o, u are vowels.
CONSONANT- All the other letters of the alphabet are consonants.
SENTENCE- A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. It must contain a verb and it must make complete sense on its own.
DECEMBER
EXCLAMATION MARK- This is used to show really strong feelings or someone shouting.
QUESTION MARK- This is used to show that a statement is a question.
COMMA- These are used in lists and between two ideas in a sentence.
SPEECH MARKS- Show when someone is speaking- they go before and after the words are spoken.
JANUARY
TENSE- This tells you when the action is happening.
PAST TENSE- Tells you that something has already happened- Paul ran in the race.
PRESENT TENSE- Tells you that something is happening now- Paul is running in the race.
FUTURE TENSE- Tells you that something will happen- Paul will run in the race.
FEBRUARY
CONJUNCTIONS- Words that can join two small sentences together to form one long sentence- so, and, but, however
PHRASE- A short piece of a sentence which doesn’t make sense on its own and does not contain a verb.
CLAUSE- Similar to a phrase but contains a verb.
MARCH
APOSTROPHE- makes two words into one- We have= We’ve/ They are= They’re
- shows ownership- The boy’s coat/ The boys’ coats
HYPHEN- Joins two words together- A man-eating tiger
- A pair of fur-lined boots
APRIL
SIMILE- Describes something by saying it’s like something else - As quiet as a mouse
- As thin as a rake
METAPHOR- A special type of simile which describes something as something else- He was a raging bull.
ALLITERATION- Repeats the same sounds at the beginning of words- She sells sea-shells on the sea shore.
MAY
RHYME- Words that have the same ending sound- late, weight, straight
RHYTHM- The beat of a poem.
LIMERICK- A special kind of poem with five lines.
