Portfolio – A portable case for carrying the art and images of an artist
Charcoal – Drawing material made from burnt wood
Critic – A person who makes judgements about something

Style – The technique or expression of an artist
Abstract – An artwork that deliberately does not appear like the original
Background - The area behind or around the main part of a picture

Landscape – A painting, drawing or photograph that scenery such as trees, forests and rivers appear
Cross-Hatching – Drawing lines that cross each other in many directions to create tone
Ancient – Very old or old-fashioned

Aerial View – Seeing from a point of great height ‘birds eye view’
Blend – To combine/mix colours together
Darkroom – Room used for processing photographs

Diagram – A sketch or drawing to explain how something works
Carving – The technique of cutting the surface of a block of material to shape it
Shape – The outline appearance of something

Cartoon – A drawing or series of drawings e.g. in a comic book
Acetate – A strong, transparent sheet of plastic used for making artwork covers
Pattern - The repetition of anything e.g. lines, shapes

Sculpture – A three-dimensional work of art
Varnish – A protective, liquid finish applied to a surface
Exterior - Something that is outside

Mixed Media – A technique using two or more artistic media, e.g. pastel, ink
Textile – A cloth, usually made by weaving or knitting
Life Drawing - Drawing the human figure from a live model

Apex – The highest point or summit
Outline – A line or shape marking the boundaries of an object
Print – To reproduce by putting ink onto a surface e.g. photocopying

Montage – Placing together images or photographs on a background
Contrasting Colours – Colours that are found on the colour wheel e.g. red and green
Bleed-proof - Describes inks and paints that will not spread when wet
