YEAR 9 LAC WORDS


 

Year 9 LAC Words

SEPTEMBER

NOUN- A noun names people, places or things.

PRONOUN- These can take the place of nouns to stop you repeating yourself too much

-Tanya loves chocolate biscuits and Tanya also loves cake. 

-Tanya loves chocolate biscuits and she also loves cake.

PROPER NOUN- These begin with a capital letter. Your name is a proper Noun so are the names of countries, rivers, etc.

 

OCTOBER

PREFIX- Added to the front of a word to form a new word- underground/ misundertstand

SUFFIX- Goes at the end of the word to form a new word- gardening/ management

SYLLABLE- You can break words up into syllables- try it with your name

NOVEMBER

SYNONYMS- Words with similar meanings- scared/petrified/frightened

ANTONYMS- Words that mean the opposite of each other- hot/cold

HOMOPHONES- Words which sound the same but have different meanings- wail/whale

DECEMBER

THESAURUS- A book that helps you find alternative words.

DICTIONARY- Tells you what words mean.

ENCYCLOPEDIA- Books full of information about a wide range of subjects

DIALOGUE- When people speak in a story.

 

JANUARY

ADJECTIVES- Describing words that tell you more about a noun.

COMPARATIVE- The form of an adjective used to compare two things- Sarah is taller than John.

SUPERLATIVE- The form of an adjective used to compare more than two things- Fluffy is the fattest cat I know.

 

FEBRUARY

CONTENTS- A list that tells you what is in a book.

INDEX- Tells you where to find topics in a book.

BIOGRAPHY- The story of someone’s life not written by themselves.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY- A person’s life story written by themselves.

 

MARCH

MYTHS- Ancient made up stories about gods and heroes.

LEGENDS- Traditional stories based on true stories.

FABLES- Short tales which make a point about a moral- The Tortoise and the Hare

 

APRIL

FAIRYTALES- Stories for children which usually begin ’Once upon a time’ and end with ’They all lived happily ever after.’

FANTASY- Stories describing  magical adventures in an imaginary world.

SCIENCE FICTION- Stories which are usually set in the future and are about space, aliens or time travel.

 

MAY

FICTION- Stories, plays and poems which are ’made up’ by the writer.

NON-FICTION- Writing for newspapers or magazines or anything that isn’t ’made up’.

FACT- Something that is true. If you can prove it, it’s a fact- The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.

OPINION- What someone thinks, although others may not agree- Man United are the best football team in the world.
