Merit Overview

Praise Merit System (Years 8 to 10)

Lisnagarvey High school aims to ensure its code of conduct is applied fairly and consistently and coincides with the school values. It is our belief that the best way to ensure the highest standards in both behaviour and work is to create a positive ethos where the self-confidence and self-esteem of pupils is promoted by regular praise.  A school culture which is dominated by a mutual respect between pupils and between staff and pupils will lead not only to a positive working environment but also to the fulfillment of the pupils’ potential both academically and socially.

Our school merit scheme operates with Years 8, 9 and 10 pupils. Throughout the school year good work and effort is recognised by a system of merits. At the beginning of the year pupils are given a ’bronze’ merit booklet to store any merit points they are given. As part of subject lessons, teachers are encouraged to award pupils by giving them merit points (e.g. stickers/stamps).  Pupils can then see the number of merit points they have and the comments made by their class teacher. Once a pupil has filled their bronze booklet with merit stickers, they will receive a reward.  This then allows them to progress onto a silver merit booklet and finally a gold booklet; receiving rewards along the way.

As well as receiving certificates and small rewards thoughout the school year, at the end of each school term the pupils with the most merit points in each year will have the opportunity to take part in a Praise Merit day trip.  They have an influence over where this trip will be to!
