Pupils will follow a course which will teach them the basic skills involved in successfully playing the game of Rugby.
In their first year the emphasis during class time will be placed on learning how to protect themselves in contact situations, making tackles and recieving tackles, learning how to fall safely and correct placement of the ball to ensure retention of the ball during play. Natural skills such as running with the ball and support play are encouraged and reinforced at every opportunity.
The basics of scrummaging, rucking and mauling and lineout play are also taught and these fundamental skills are put into practice and the pupil’s understanding of them is put to the test during friendly games against other schools and also at various year 8 tournaments throughout the year.
This year Lisnagarvey organised a year 8 Blitz at the school playing fields in which twelve teams took part. It was a very successful tournament and was enjoyed by all. The photograph above shows Lisnagarvey in black in action against Boys Model in the semi final. Lisnagarvey went through to the final and were narrowly defeated by one try to nil by Forthill, the eventual tournament winners.
