LAC WORDS – SCIENCE – YEAR 9
 
Populations
Adaptation – a change in an animal or plant.
Characteristic – a feature.
Predator – an animal that hunts & eats other animals.
Population – group of plants/animals of the same species.
 
Using Forces
Resultant – the sum of the forces
Accelerating – getting faster
Decelerating – slowing down
 
Elements
Element – simplest chemical substance with only one type of atom
Compound – 2 or more elements joined together chemically
Molecule – 2 or more atoms joined together
Reactivity – how reactive something is
 
Earth & Space
Eclipse – when the moon passes between the sun and the earth
Orbit – path of a planet around the sun
Solar system – the sun plus the nine planets
Astronaut – person that travels to space
 
Food & Digestion
Carbohydrates – foods containing sugar or starch
Digestion – the breakdown of food into soluble substances
Enzymes – chemicals that help to break down food
Intestines – tube-like part of the digestive system
 
Staying Alive
Oxygen – the gas we need to stay alive
Carbon dioxide – the gas we breathe out
Diaphragm – flat muscle below lungs that helps us breathe in & out
Capillaries – tiny blood vessels
Haemoglobin – protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen
 
Sight & Sound
Refraction – bending light
Reflection – light bouncing back from a shiny surface
Vibrate – fast movement backwards & forwards
Frequency – how often
Hertz – the unit used to measure the frequency of sound waves
 
Chemical reactions
Calcium carbonate – chemical name for limestone
Combustion – burning
Galvanise – method of rust prevention
 
Plants
Photosynthesis – plants making food from light
Chlorophyll – green chemical in leaves that traps light
Variegated – leaves that are green & white
Xylem – tubes that carry water (& nutrients) from roots to leaf
Phloem – tubes that carry sugar from leaf to rest of plant
