Apparatus – science equipment.
Experiment – practical work.
Temperature – measure of heat.
Safety – how to be careful.
 
Solutions & Separations
Pure – a substance with nothing else mixed with it
Evaporate – change form a liquid to a gas
Condense – change from a gas to a liquid
Chromatography – used to separate colours of dyes
 
Variety of Life
Species – each different kind of plant or animal
Classification – putting similar living things into groups
Invertebrate – animal without a backbone
Vertebrate – animal with a backbone
Amphibians – one of the groups of vertebrates
 
Forces
Friction – force that slows things down
Lubricating – oiling machine parts
Gravity – force that pulls us down to Earth
Density – a measure of how ‘heavy’ something is
 
Acids & Alkalis
Acid – substance with a pH less than 7
Alkali – substance with a pH more than 7
Indicator – substance that tells us if something is acid or alkali by changing colour
Neutralisation – solutions which are neither acid nor alkali
 
Electricity
Conductor – material that allows electricity to pass through
Insulator – material that does not allow electricity to pass through
Current – the flow of electricity along a wire
Circuit – the path of an electric circuit

Particles – what everything is made of
Liquid – one of the states of matter
Diffusion – the spreading of particles
 
Energy
Energy – needed to make things work.
Joule – unit for measuring energy
Kinetic – movement
Potential – stored
 
Human Reproduction
Fertilisation – when the sperm and the egg join
Placenta – organ which connects mother and developing baby
Pregnancy – time when female carries a developing baby in her uterus
Menstruation – a girl’s period
 
Ecological Relationships
Herbivores – animals that eat plants
Carnivores – animals that other animals
Producers – green plants
