Departmental Aim

The pupil who has studied English at Lisnagarvey High School should leave the School with a love of reading, an appreciation of literature, a keen critical insight and an ability to communicate with confidence, both orally and in writing.

Concentration on the core functional areas of reading, writing, speaking and use of ICT, equips pupils with the essential skills required and prepares them for the world of work.  This has been increased with the introduction of the Key Skills in Communication qualification. This course offers the opportunity to study in more depth, English for the world of work and business.

We also believe that the study of English should be enjoyable and we aim to develop this through a wide range of teaching techniques. The Reading Partners Programme has been a valuable addition in the drive to improve reading ages among Year 8 and 9 pupils and to instil within them a love of reading.

Opportunities to write creatively, attend professional drama and film productions are made available and promoted for all pupils.

Overall the English Department, in line with the Revised Curriculum, would hope to provide learning which is active, interactive, relevant and engaging.
