September
Joint – A method of joining materials together eg nails, glue etc.
Chisel – A long steel tool with a sharp edge for cutting wood.
Try-square – A tool used to mark out 90 degrees on wood.
Tenon Saw – A saw with a stiff back used for cutting straight lines through wood.
October
Linear Motion – Movement which goes in a straight line in one direction only.
Rotary Motion – Movement which goes in a circular fashion eg. a wheel turning.
Oscillating Motion – Movement which goes back and forth in a curve eg swinging door.
Reciprocating Motion – Movement which goes back and forth in a straight line eg a lift going up and down.

Friction – The grip (force) one material has on another.
Cam – A mechanism which changes rotary motion to reciprocating motion.
Follower – The part that rests on the top of a cam.
Crank – A bent metal rod for turning something (like an old car starting handle).
December
Current - The flow of electricity.
Conductor – A material that allows electricity to flow eg any metal.
Insulator – A material that slows the flow of electricity eg plastic, rubber, wood.
Battery – A device that stores electrical energy.
January
Resistor – A component that restricts the flow of electricity.
Rigid Polystyrene – A useful plastic which comes in many colours and can be easily bent and shaped.
Linisher – An electrical sanding machine for smoothing wood or plastic.
Vertical Drill – Large drilling machine for making circular holes in materials.
February
Fuse – A component which protects electrical appliances from damage if there is a surge of electricity.
Light Emitting Diode – A small electronic component which gives off light if connected properly to a power supply.
Gerbil – A machine used for cutting off waste material from a vacuum formed shape.
Vacuum former – Machine for shaping plastics using heat and suction.

Solder – A metal alloy made of tin and lead used to join electrical components.
Computer Aided Design (CAD) – Producing designs for products on a computer.
Design Brief – A short description of a design or task.
Workplane – A flat plane in a computer screen on which you draw a 2D design (like drawing on a sheet of paper).
April
Extrusion – Creating a 3D object on computer from a 2D design.
View – What you actually see and draw of an object from a certain angle.
Drafting – Another word for designing in 2D.
Highlights – Areas of lighter colour which give the direction of light.
May
Interface Box – A product used to connect a computer to output devices when computer programming.
Routine – Another name for a computer program.
Annotation – Adding notes to your design to explain what it does etc.
