Mrs J Orr (Head of Department), Mrs K Nowicka (Language Assistant)
In French classes, we aim to encourage all pupils to develop their linguistic capabilities to the highest possible degree and to provide them with stimulating and enjoyable learning experiences.
Pupils work through a variety of topics in the language and develop the four skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. The approach to learning is a communicative one related to everyday situations in France.
Pupils currently follow AQA Specification A. They take examinations in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The oral component is conducted and assessed by their teacher.
Polish GCSE is offered to native speakers and is taught by a Polish Language Assistant. Pupils in year 8 will study one unit of work in Polish.
Pupils are taught by a specialist teacher in the main Modern Language classroom. This room contains the PALE system which promotes listening and speaking activities. Reading material in French is available, both within the department and in the school library, to promote further, independent study of the language.
The European Day of Languages is celebrated yearly in school, providing opportunities to promote the study of French and other languages. GCSE students prepare and deliver taster sessions for use in some of the local feeder Primary Schools.
German language classes are offered to pupils who have not studied French before and have lived in Germany before attending Lisnagarvey. This is facilitated when the need arises.
