Technology & Design
September
Graphics – The use of drawing and images in design work.
Isometric – A 3-D method of drawing an object or product using 30 degree angles.
Oblique - A 3-D method of drawing an object or product using 45 degree angles.
Render – To add colour and texture to a drawing to make it look realistic (Using colouring pencils, paints etc).
October
Acrylic – A hard rigid plastic which can be clear or coloured.
Finishing – The term generally given to the final stages of making a product such as sanding it down and painting etc. The quality of finish is very important.
Strip Heater (Line Bender) – A machine that heats plastic ready for bending.
November
Tensol Cement – A type of liquid glue used to stick acrylic plastic.
Mould – An item generally shaped from wood used to make products in the vacuum former. Moulds can also be made from metal for making casts.
Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) – A man made board made from sawdust and glue, which is used a lot in DIY and technology and design.
Impact Adhesive – A very strong glue which sticks immediately on impact providing it has been applied correctly.
December
Development – Shows how a product is designed from start to finish.
Concepts – Your first thoughts and ideas about a project (probably done as sketches).
Research – Looking at existing ideas similar to your project.
Appraisal – Suggesting good and bad points about a project.
January
System – What is added to a product to allow it to work. This can be electronic, mechanical, pneumatic or computer controlled.
Input – What is put in to a system to make it work eg turning on a switch.
Output – The end result of a system eg a light bulb giving out light or a speaker giving out noise.
Printed Circuit Board (PCB) – A special board used to mount electrical components and join them together.
February
Voltage – The force which pushes electricity through a circuit.
Circuit – A number of electronic components joined together to make something work.
Ohm – The measurement of electrical resistance of a component.
Ampere (Amp) – The measurement of electrical current.
March
Transistor – An electronic device used for switching (and amplifying).
Thyristor – An electronic component which acts as a switch like a transistor but stays on until it is reset. It is useful for alarm circuits.
Switch – Used for turning on and off appliances.
Housing – A box type product which is generally used for holding and hiding items such as circuit boards, batteries etc.
April
Wasting – Removal of any material that you do not want by drilling, sawing, sanding etc.
Washer – A small round flat component with a hole in it, which is used with a bolt and nut to reduce friction.
Thread – The spiral shape on a screw, nut or bolt
May
Assembly – A number of individual parts which are joined together. (Either actual parts or computer designed parts).
Ferrous – Any metal which contains Iron.
Thermoplastic – A type of plastic which will regain its original shape if it is reheated.
Sequence – A series of steps used to describe an order of events.
