Departmental Aim

  • To stimulate and maintain pupils’ curiosity, interest and enjoyment in road craft, road safety and be aware of its implications for the individual, the community and the environment
  • To give pupils important life skills and the ability to cope with road and driving conditions as they exist in Northern Ireland today.
  • To encourage pupils to work independently and as part of a group


 

An Overview of Key Stage 4 Curriculum

Pupils taking the GCSE course in Motor Vehicle & Road User Studies follow CCEA specification

The examination has 3 main parts:
 

  • The foundation tier paper and higher tier paper carrying 60% of the overall marks.
  • An investigative study carried out during the two year course carrying 20% of the overall marks.
  • Practical riding carried out on a 49 cc moped within the school grounds and carrying 20% of the overall marks.


 

With varied topics including the Highway Code, alcohol abuse, accident procedure and legal requirements of owning and insuring a car, pupils completing the course will have a greater knowledge and awareness of road safety.



 

Departmental Facilities and Resources

As part of its programme of road safety education in schools, the Department of Environment provides all books, resources and a 49 cc moped to help teachers teach road safety at Key Stage 4.

Our classrooms have interactive whiteboards, DVD and video projection and connections to the internet enabling pupils to access on-line resources.
