In order to take the AS or A2 Level in Applied Science it is expected that you will have successfully completed a GCSE Science course. However, the most impor- tant requirement is that you have a practical interest in and enthusiasm for science. During this course you will be able to:
| Module | Overview | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| UNIT 1 Investigating Science At Work |
This unit gives you a general introduction to the use of science in the workplace and also details of those people who will use science in their daily work. You will research local organisations which use science. | Internal Coursework |
| UNIT 2 Energy Transfer Systems |
In this unit you will consider some essential knowl- edge regarding the uses and transfer of energy in physical and human biological systems. The unit also looks at some of the ethical issues that may be considered when diagnosing and treating illnesses. | External Assessment |
| UNIT 3 Finding out about Substances |
This chemistry unit explores the work of the analyti- cal chemist and the types of work that they may undertake e.g. how to obtain and prepare samples for analysis | Internal Coursework |
| Module | Overview | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| UNIT 7 Planning & Carrying out a Scientific Inves-tigation |
In this unit you will draw on the knowledge and skills you have learned to conduct a full investigation from an area of science that interests you. | Internal Coursework |
| UNIT 9 Sports Science |
This unit utilises biological knowledge to consider the work undertaken by coaches and physiotherapists working in sport. You will have the opportunity to study first aid techniques. | Internal Coursework |
| UNIT 14 The Healthy Body |
This unit is biology based and in it you will learn about some of the essential knowledge that, for example, nurses and other technicians may use whilst treating patients. | External Examination |
This course is designed to enable candidates to develop both a broad understanding of a wide range of
scientific principles and give you the opportunity to focus on a specific pathway e.g. health care or
sports science. It is also designed to maintain the recognised standards required by employers within
the science sector.
Furthermore, this course will also provide you with a sound basis for progression to a range of Higher
Education courses e.g. sports science, biochemical science, materials science, food technology, health
care or any other science based course.
It is also worth remembering that taking a GCE in a science subject does not limit you to following science courses later on. Many of the skills obtained through a science course are useful and sought after in
a variety of other areas.
