On completion of this unit students should:

- Understand the nature of business and ownership

- Understand the classification of business activities

- Understand business aims and objectives in different sectors

- Know the main functional areas that support business organisations.

 

 

Assignment Scenario

 

Select four businesses with different types of ownership and investigate their aims and objectives. You can choose the businesses, but there should be a clear contrast between them — for example, one could be a multi-national organisation, the second could be a well known national company, the third could be a local privately owned outlet, and the fourth could be a sole trader.

 
 
 
Task 1a
Write a brief report that describes the four different organisations you have selected. You need to cover the following topics for each business:
 
  • Ownership - include its advantages and disadvantages;
  • Purpose – why it operates;
  • Size - Number of employees, sale/profit figures;
  • Scale – local, regional, national, European/worldwide;  
  • General Information - what sector does it operate in (private, public, voluntary sector) what products/services does it sell, how long has it been established etc;
 

b. Compare and contrast the ownership of two selected businesses.

 

Task 2

Write a brief report on the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary sector. In your report you need to: 

 

  • Discuss the meaning of the primary, secondary and tertiary sector.
  • In a table, produce a list of examples of local, regional and national businesses that exist within each of the three classifications.
  • Explain areas of growth or decline in the primary, secondary and tertiary sector.

 

 Task 3a

Now choose two of the businesses. Prepare and give a verbal presentation on the businesses, clearly describing:

 

  • What each business does;
  • Explain what is meant by the term ‘Aims’;
  • Explain what is meant by the term ‘Objectives’;
  • Discuss the purpose of setting aims and objectives for businesses;
  • Explain the specific aims and objectives of each of your two businesses; 

 

b. Compare and contrast the aims and objectives of two selected business. 

 

 Task 4

 For one of the business’ use a poster to:

 

  • Describe what is meant by a function;
  • Discuss the main functional areas found in a business and their purpose.

  

Task 5

Write a brief report for two selected business to explain how the functional areas each play a role in supporting their aims and objectives.

 

Task 6

For each of your two selected businesses, explain how the functional areas interact and relate to each other: for example, how is human resources connected to the other functional areas?
