Basketball is a new sporting activity introduced to Lisnagarvey which takes place every Thursday in the gym 3:25 – 4:45pm.
Basketball can be enjoyed by both boys and girls of all ages with any skill level. Participation in athletic sports like basketball we feel helps improve physical fitness, coordination, self-discipline, and is something which gives our students valuable opportunities to learn about teamwork.
Practice will include a warm up, practice drills to help improve hand-eye co-ordination, team skills, fun games and finally finishing with a proper full court game.
All you need to play is a comfortable pair of trainers, shorts or tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt or school sports top if possible.
Basic Skills of Basketball
The basic skills that are needed to play basketball include:
Dribbling - moving the ball around the court by bouncing it with your fingers and hands.
Passing - throwing the ball from one player to another.
Shooting - propelling the ball toward the basketball net in hopes of scoring a goal.
The Team
There are five members on each basketball team: the center, two forwards and two guards. The team who has the ball works together to move up the court and shoot at the opposition basket. The opposing defenders try to stop the offensive team from scoring.
