Change Makers
Change Makers in Lisnagarvey High School, Lisburn
Change Makers’ is a new and exciting project comprising of a collaborative approach by three organisations ie Belfast YMCA, Community Relations in Schools (CRIS), and Northern Ireland Children’s Enterprise.
These three organisations have come together and created a community relations/citizenship programme for post primary schools in Lisburn and Belfast.
In September all of our year 8 pupils in Lisnagarvey High School participated in a day-long event involving the Change Makers team, which was designed to build relationships and consider aspirations for life at secondary school and beyond. Pupils learnt team building and communication skills by working with others during year group ice-breaking sessions. They then divided into workshops and produced their own unique identity shields focusing on areas such as ‘what I like most about me’, ‘the happiest time of my life’, ‘what my dreams are’, and ‘what my community looks like’.
On the 13th and 20th of October 2010, three of our year 8 classes participated in active teaching strategies such as the ‘Alphabet Activity’. The aim of this lesson was to start looking at respecting difference in our society. Year 8 particularly enjoyed the ‘School Character Scenarios’ which encouraged young people to think about how they may support others who may feel excluded. Pupils found out a lot of interesting information when they took part in the ‘Name Graffiti’ and were asked questions about their name ie who picked it? what does it mean? Pupils adored the interaction of talking and listening to the historical background involved in each other’s name. The session ended with pupils being asked to design their own party. All year groups thoroughly enjoyed the bright and colourful resources provided within the workshop.
All pupils have very positively commented about how much they enjoyed the Change Makers programme stating:-
‘It was really good and I liked jumping over to the letters which asked questions about my identity. I also liked the staff’. By Elle
‘I like finding out where peoples names come from. I found out that one of my friends name comes from Barbados’. By Caitlin
Alison Dougherty and her team will be coming back into school in January 2011 to participate in an accredited course with year 12 pupils. We are extremely delighted to welcome the Change Makers team on board and look forward to working with them over the next three years.
