The Lisnagarvey sixth form experience is based upon recognising students as young adults. They enjoy a range of privileges and in return are expected to demonstrate maturity at all times. This includes independent study and self-motivation during formal lectures and private study sessions.
Lisnagarvey High School places a very strong emphasis on the value of
extra-curricular activities as a contribution to the education of its pupils,
particularly in developing social skills, self-esteem, initiative and the
ability to work as part of a team.
The school takes great pride in the extensive range of extra-curricular
activities for their students. These include football, rugby, badminton,
netball, volleyball, table tennis, golf, fishing, hockey and athletics.
A variety of well organised events further enriches the “learning
experience” for our sixth form students. Such events include the annual
School Formal arranged by the Sixth Form Committee, the Liverpool
Football Tour and the annual Rock Concert. Students this year were
given the opportunity to organise a 50th Celebration held in the Hilton
Hotel, Belfast. During the course of this forthcoming academic year our
sixth form students will undertake full responsibility for organising a three day educational
visit to either Paris or Barcelona.
Sixth form students organise events to support worthy charities
throughout Northern Ireland. This years nominated charities included
Action MS, Children in Need, Action Cancer, Comic Relief, Phones
For Schools and local Lisburn children.
In response to student demand the school has recently installed a
state-of-the-art fitness suite. Facilities include fixed and free weight
stations, running machines, aerobics machines, cross-trainers,
step-machines and bike-trainers. The suite is opened to all students
during timetabled PE lessons and is also available to the wider
community.
The school is privileged to have the experience of Mr Smyth, an
outdoor education officer, leading the Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award programme. It is a system of challenge and adventure
for young people at three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold. In
the Scheme each individual is assessed on his or her progress,
perseverance and achievement and Awards are within reach of
all. Among other things, the Scheme is designed to develop
self-discipline, enterprise, initiative, self-reliance and a sense of
responsibility to others.
Lisnagarvey is pleased to offer its students the opportunity to take 12 subsidised driving
lessons at an amazing price of £35. The normal price for these lessons would be
approximately £300. Lessons are delivered by a Department of Environment Approved
Driving Instructor. The training will be conducted during school hours.
The importance of helping students to choose the right career on leaving school is recognised. Every effort is made to raise students’ awareness of opportunities in the many types of career open to them. Students are provided with guidance and support in relation to Higher Education in order to help them make informed choices. Students will also be given the chance to participate in a variety of Higher Education Awareness Days held in Queens University Belfast, University of Ulster, and Stranmillis University College, Belfast.
