While studying HE pupils learn LAC words and meanings each month throughout the year.
In Year 8 the words cover basic equipment such as hygiene, economics, management and organising. Basic foods such as lettuce, broccoli, banana, tomato and pineapple are included.
In Year 9 included are ascorbic acid, bacteria, pasteurised, asparagus and dietary fibre.
In Year 10 we include the words expenditure, pepperoni, emotional, adolescents, compromise, modification, cholesterol and fluoride.
These words and meanings are related to work the pupils are completing in class.
After Key Stage 3 pupils make their choice of subjects for GCSE. Those offered at present are Child Development and Hospitality.
While studying HE homeworks are varied. There can be written questions and answers, worksheets and sometimes research into foods both in the home and shops. At times we encourage pupils to keep a food diary so that we can discuss and compare the choices being made by pupils.
We hope as they leave school pupils will be able to make wise choices which will allow them to enjoy happy and healthy lives.
We have encouraged pupils to enter food competitions with some success.
Pupils in particular enjoyed a prize trip to an organic farm and had a most enjoyable and educational day. It ended in Sainsbury’s at Sprucefield where pupils were shown some of the meat which had been produced on the farm that they had visited. They also had a demonstration on how to cook the various cuts of beef. They then enjoyed tasting the food!
We also had a visit from Mrs Arlene Thompson representing Sainsbury’s. She showed our 6th form students how to cook one pot meals for four for less than a fiver!
In previous years we had a visit from the Army. They showed how to cook healthy meals in the morning and in the afternoon they then took the pupils outside for a fitness session. This showed the pupils how important good food and exercise are to everyone.
