Our school merit scheme operates with Years 8, 9 and 10 pupils. Throughout the year good work and effort is recognised by a system of merits. Pupils will be awarded with prizes and bronze, silver or gold certificates, depending on the number of merits gained. Each pupil will receive a bronze merit booklet in September. This booklet is the responsibility of the pupils and it is up to them to gain merit points. When the bronze booklet is complete, pupils will receive a certificate and gift voucher, and it will allow them to advance onto their silver booklet.
As part of subject lessons, teachers are encouraged to award a merit stickers/stamps for reasons either specified on their booklet or for reasons that can be written onto the card. The idea is to catch students being good (emphasise the positive).
A Team Captain will be nominated for each year group with the one for year 10 being the Team Leader. These pupils will help decide possible trips for those pupils who gain the most merit points at the end of each term. Last years trips involved a reward trip to the cinema and pantomime at the Grand Opera House in Belfast. At the end of the school year, a larger trip to the likes of M&D Amusement Park in Scotland was also arranged
