Online Safety Advice

Whilst the Internet is a vast virtual world of information, it is important to remember that there is no control over the content that can be placed upon it. The use of ICT is an essential part of learning at Lisnagarvey High School, and therefore it is vital to consider Internet Safety.

We have a “Report Abuse” button on our website that any child who is experiencing an online problem can click and report the issue to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP).

GUIDANCE FOR PARENTS

1)    Social Networking Sites – you may need to discuss “rules” for the use of Social Networking Sites with your children. These rules may include the types of pictures that they are allowed to upload, the type of messages that they are allowed to post, the amount of time that you allow them to spend online and perhaps the type of people who they accept as friends. It is important for children to know that online, sometimes people are not who they claim to be.

2)    Computer Location – keep the computer in a family room with the screen pointing into the room. This enables other family members to see what surfing is taking place.

3)    Get Online! – if you don’t understand the activities that your children are engaging in online, ask them to show you so that you can go online yourself to become more familiar with the benefits and dangers associated with the Internet.

4)    If you are worried – talk to your children about their online habits; encourage them to speak to you if anything happens that they might be concerned about. It may be advantageous to spend time with your children whilst they are online to see how they interact with online services.
