Departmental Aim:
It is the aim of Lisnagarvey High School’s ICT department to equip all students with the necessary skills to succeed in an ever changing technological world. By studying ICT students will be able to use digital and online technologies appropriately, effectively and creatively to acquire knowledge, to practice skills and to develop a wide range of competencies not only as individuals but also as contributors to the economy.
Information and communication technology offers opportunities for pupils to;
- Develop their ICT capability and understand the importance of information and how to select and prepare it
- Develop their skills in using hardware and software to enable them to manipulate information.
- Develop their ability to apply ICT capability and ICT to support their use of language and communication
- Explore their attitudes towards ICT, its value for themselves, others and society, and their awareness of its advantages and limitations
- Develop good Health and Safety attitudes and practice.
ICT is used in three main ways in the school:
1. As a cross curricular theme at KS3
2. As a learning and teaching medium
3. As a discrete GCSE and A level subject
An Overview of Key Stage 3 Curriculum:
The Key Stage 3 curriculum is mainly skills based giving our students the necessary proficiency in using the core digital applications needed for them to progress. The programme of study laid out provides learners with an opportunity to develop, improve and advance their computer skills. Students are given the opportunity to use ICT in a variety of ways including; research, presentation, group work, web design, communication, data handling, modelling, measurement and control, and in the creation of computer software.
All pupils at KS3 are involved with the CCEA IT Accreditation Scheme which results in a Competence Certificate at the end of Year 10.
An Overview of Key Stage 4 Curriculum
GCSE ICT is concerned with the handling of information and involves creating, accessing, storing, organising, processing, presenting, communicating and transmitting information in a variety of electronic forms.
The subject is assessed by the means of two terminal examination papers and six pieces of coursework.
Coursework content accounts for 60% of the overall marks and consists of six assignments.
A1 Design a Multimedia Presentation
A2 Produce a Booklet or Report
A3 Design a Website
B1 Use of the Internet
B2 & B3 Spreadsheet and Database Exercises
GCSE ICT allows students to develop skills that will enable them to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly transformed by access to varied and developing technology.
Departmental Facilities and Resources
Lisnagarvey currently have 5 state-of-the-art computer suites which are used for teaching and learning primarily but they serve as the focus for whole class based curriculum support.
It is the school’s intention that these suites contain the most up–to–date PCs and that they are replaced after a reasonable time has elapsed. Pupils have access to the following facilities:
§ Windows based PCs
§ Network storage of work
§ MS Office software
§ ClipArt
§ Educational software
§ Internet and Email
§ Black and White laser printing
§ Colour inkjet printing
§ Scanning
§ Digital photography
Subject based areas including Science, Art & Design, Technology & Design and Home Economies have cluster groups of PCs available to pupil’s which allows for access to more specialist ICT facilities.
The majority of classrooms also have Interactive whiteboards; a visual resource that can help teachers to present lessons in lively and engaging ways. The boards also allow pupils to interact with the new learning methods being demonstrated.
