Year 11
In Year 11 Students study Unit 1 - ‘Understanding Our Natural World’.
This unit focuses on Physical Geography and is divided into three themes:
Theme A: The Dynamic Landscape
- The Drainage Basin – a component of the water cycle
- River processes and features
- Coastal processes and features
- Sustainable management of rivers
- Sustainable management of coasts
Theme B: Our Changing Weather and Climate
- Measurement of the weather elements
- Weather systems in the British Isles
- The causes and consequences of climatic change
Theme C: Our Restless Earth
- Basic rock types
- Plate tectonics theory
- Tectonic Activity in the British Isles
- Earthquakes – can they be managed?
At the end of Year 11, students will sit their first GCSE examination, based on this work. This examination is worth 37.5% of their final GCSE mark. In the examination, Theme A is worth 50% of the marks and Themes B and C are worth 25% each.
