Year 8 History Unit 1
Unit of Work:                        My Personal History                               
Timescale:                            September-October                                
 Year:                                       2009/10

Description of Unit: Throughout this unit pupils will gain an understanding of what history is, why it is relevant and useful and how they each play a part in making history. Pupils will not only be able to develop their skills of inquiry but will also explore their own historic journeys and how they have shaped them as individuals.

Knowledge, Understanding and Skills
 
Throughout this unit pupils will have the opportunity to investigate the past and its impact on our world today through an understanding of:
o         Cause and effect
o         Continuity and change
and by developing:
o         The enquiry skills to undertake historical investigations
o         Critical thinking skills in their approach to solving problems and making decisions
o         Chronological awareness and the ability to make connections between historical periods, events and turning points
 
Key Elements
 
Personal Understanding: Pupils will explore how history has affected their personal identity, culture and lifestyle.
 
Employability: Pupils will understand how the skills developed through history will be useful in a range of careers.
Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities

By the end of this unit pupils will be able to:
o         Research and manage information effectively to investigate historical issues, using Mathematics and ICT where appropriate

o         Communicate effectively in oral, visual and written formats (including ICT and moving images) showing an awareness of audience, purpose and attention to accuracy
o         Display creativity and initiative when developing ideas and following them through

This unit is a collaborative project which links up to Maths, English, R.E. and Geography.

 
Year 8 History Unit 2
Unit of Work:                        The Holocaust                                    
Timescale:                           October-November                                     
Year:                                      2009/10

Description of Unit: Throughout this unit pupils willgain an understanding of what the Holocaust was, why Jews were persecuted, who made the Holocaust happen and why it is important that they study the Holocaust. Pupils will develop their skills of enquiry and their ethical awareness.

Year 8 History Unit 3
Unit of Work:                        The Normans Arrive                               
Timescale:                            December-February                                         
Year:                                       2009/10

Description of Unit: Throughout this unit pupils will gain an understanding of the Battle of Hastings, considering why the Normans were victorious. Pupils will have an opportunity to look at the changes the Normans made including Normans Castles. They will become familiar with the Feudal System put in place and the Domesday Book.

Unit of Work:       The Normans in Ireland                                     Timescale:          February-May                                  Year:                 2009/10

Description of Unit: Throughout this unit pupils will gain an understanding of the impact of the Normans in Ireland. Pupils will not only be able to develop their skills of inquiry but will also engage with both physical and documentary evidence to gain an understanding of their heritage. Pupils will also have a clear understanding of cause and effect.
