Year 9 History Unit 1
Unit of Work:       What was important about the period 1500-1700                 
Timescale:           September-October                           
Year:                      2009/10

Description of Unit: This unit focuses on teaching the historical term significance and why some events in the past are considered more significant than others. The pupils will begin by compiling simple criteria to judge the importance of events in the recent past and then move on to investigating how historians make judgements about significant events in the period 1500-1600. the unit will focus on the key elements of Cultural Understanding and Media Awareness. It will develop knowledge and understanding of turning points in history and pupils’ ability to make sensitive, informed and balanced responses. It can help make history relevant to the pupils by making connections between these skills and the world of work.

Young people should have the opportunities to investigate how history has affected their personal identity, culture and lifestyle e.g. how their religion, nationality, traditions and culture have been shaped by significant events from the Renaissance period.

Unit of Work:  Political and Religious Conflict – ‘King Billy’ and its impact today        
Timescale:     October-January                
Year:                 2009/10

Description of Unit:  In this unit pupils will examine the legacy of the Williamite wars on Northern Ireland. They will address the key elements of personal and mutual understanding, media awareness and citizenship. 
Learning Objective: 
Knowledge, Understanding and Skills
 
Pupils will consider the impact of the Williamite wars on Ireland in the 17th century to the present day and will evaluate differing interpretations. Through this they will be able to challenge the stereotypical viewpoints and make reasoned judgements.

Unit of Work:        The Reformation                              
Timescale:           January-February                                                
Year:                       2009/10

Description of Unit: This unit focuses on the Reformation of the Church and its impact on the world today. The Key elements of Personal and Mutual Understanding, Spiritual Awareness and Moral Character are central to this unit.
Learning Objective: 
Knowledge, Understanding and Skills
 
Pupils will investigate the causes and effects of the Reformation with particular reference to its impact on the world today.

Unit of Work:        Case Study: Elizabeth’s Problems                     
Timescale:            February-April                                                 
 Year:                      2009/10

Description of Unit: The focus of this unit is the effect religious conflict had on the reign of Elizabeth I. The pupils will investigate the rivalry between Elizabeth and Mary Queen of Scots and subsequently Phillip II. The unit will focus on different perspectives at the time. The key elements of personal and mutual understanding and media awareness are present in the unit.

Pupils will investigate political, economic and religious rivalry during Elizabeth’s reign and will use enquiry skills in order to make reasoned judgements.

Unit of Work:        The Plantation & Religious Conflict in Ireland in the mid 17th Century         
Timescale:            April-June

Description of Unit:  The focus for this unit is the impact of the Ulster Plantation on life today in Northern Ireland. The pupils will also investigate how history has been used to present stereotypical images in Northern Ireland.

Pupils will have the opportunity to investigate the Plantation of Ulster and its impact, particularly on Northern Ireland today.
