Year 9 Homework

Create a list of at least 10 rules that apply to Art and Design and the art room and copy into homework books.

Find at least ten different surfaces or objects around the house, e.g. brick walls, coins etc. Place paper over the surface and produce a rubbing for each one with coloured pencils.

Choose four very different leaves from your garden or a park. Create four small detailed pencil studies (shaded). Use HB/2B pencils. Paste leaves into your homework book when completed.

Look at the previous homework and recreate the images using a coloured media, e.g. coloured pencils, paint, chalk pastels, etc.

Create a detailed colour study of a loosely folded umbrella. Show the different tones and shades that occur and also study light and shadow.

Select 5 objects from the bathroom and create a detailed pencil study of them. Place them together in a group before starting to draw.

Create a detailed colour study of your school bag. It must be opened and the contents spilling out, e.g. pencil case, lunch box, sports equipments, books etc.

Create a detailed pencil shaded study of an iron or an electric kettle from 2 views, e.g. side view, front view etc. Show the shape, form and structure.

Create a collage of real flowers and leaves, press the items between two heavy books and when dry, paste into homework books.

Select one of the flowers from previous week’s homework, enlarge and complete in the original colour.

Create a design for a sheet of wrapping paper based on your flower drawing from the previous homework. Choose a set of complimentary colours to complete the design. Use a double page spread.

Create a detailed drawing of a laced up shoe or trainer. You must show the actual shape and structure clearly, so take time to get it right! Shade using HB, B or 2B pencils.

Design a coloured door label for your room – include your favourite things in this design and complete using a coloured media (e.g. colour pencils, pastel, paint etc.).

Design a face mask using animals for your design ideas – use effective colours and expressions. Research is necessary e.g. books, internet etc.

Collect as much information on an artist that you like. Information can be found either in libraries or on the Internet. Paste into home work books or you can hand write the information and draw your own sketches.

Choose your three favourite shapes and create a pattern based on these designs. Colour using either Primary or Secondary colours. Think of really unusual shapes rather than simple squares and circles.

Create a gift card to be sold in a shop. You must colour using either Hot or Cold colours. It could be a Thank You, Birthday or Get Well card – it is up to you.

Design a cup and saucer and colour using your own colour scheme. Be very imaginative with your colour and shape selection.

Design a car of the future. Think about the overall shape, size, design and colours. Try to be as imaginative as possible. You may be able to get inspiration from car magazines, libraries or the internet.

Create an exciting landscape from your own imagination. Choose which landscape you wish to create, e.g. cityscape, beach and forest and then choose shapes and colours carefully and complete.

Create a detailed study of a tomato cut in half (draw the two half’s). Concentrate on its form, colour and texture. Try to create a three dimensional drawing.

Design a T-shirt based on Lisburn. Think about famous buildings and landmarks in the city. Your design must contain no more that 8 colours – good luck!

Take one piece of fruit and draw and shade in pencil as you see it. When complete, cut the piece of fruit in half, draw and shade what you see, including any seeds or cores etc. These should be completed on the same page.

Choose three items from your bedroom that are of great interest to you. Complete in colour.

Draw one object that best describes you, e.g. a football or a pair of ballet pumps – write a short description beside your work as to why your object best describes you.

Choose four different pieces of cutlery or kitchen utensils, for example, fork, spoon, knife, ice-cream scoop, bottle opener and draw. The emphasis is on light and shadow, which you must try to recreate in colour.

Select an ornament from home, which interests you, for example, candle holders, pictures etc. and draw it in great detail. It must be completed in HB/2B pencils.

Choose either the front or back of your house and create a detailed drawing of it. Include all details, e.g. windows; drain pipes, bricks or plaster, windowsills etc. Complete in colour.

Set up a still life of a kettle, a teacup and saucer. You may also set biscuits on the saucer if you wish. Complete using HB/2B pencils only – a pencil shaded study.

Draw a cartoon caricature that best describes you. Emphasise and exaggerate your main features and complete in colour.

Place your favourite dinner onto a plate, e.g. fish and chips, bangers and mash and copy and complete on colour.

Choose your favourite animal and draw a detailed colour study of it. You may work from imagination or from photographs if you wish.

Design and create a coloured drawing of a suitable label for a jar or bottle which contains honey, tomato sauce or pickles.

Create a detailed coloured study of a packet of sweets which you have opened and the contents spilling out (e.g. fruit pastels, skittles, jelly tots etc.).

Design and create a package for a new soap which contains fruit and herbs. You must also give it a name.

Design and create a poster for a Summer Ball. Include all details of the event, think of colours, shape, size etc. complete in colour.
